Program Office Description
The SLU AHEC Program Office will increase access to quality healthcare through community and academic partnerships by means of:
- Educational interventions
- Preceptorships - We will place medical, nursing, and allied health profession students in urban, underserved settings (e.g., community health centers, federally qualified health centers, and hospitals) for clinical experiences. These sites promote interesting places to establish professional careers.
- Coursework - Students in health professions will be provided coursework specific to addressing culturally-related needs and serving the underserved. This will include curriculum during a four-week Family Medicine Clerkship required of all medical students.
- Family Medicine Residency Training - Forest Park Hospital will serve as the residency training site for physicians seeking board certification in Family Medicine. The community hospital is located in the city of St. Louis, a federally designated health professional shortage area (HPSA), and will focus on serving in underserved areas.
- Continuing Education - We will provide continuing education for health professionals.
- Information dissemination
- Technical assistance (to reduce professional isolation, increase retention, and enhance the practice environment in underserved areas)
- Housing - We will provide low cost housing to health profession students who are placed in urban clinics for rotations. Housing units include two bedrooms, kitchen, television, resource library, and a computer workstation (which includes Internet access and interactive medical software).
