Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Saint Louis University Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month program that is open to physicians who have successfully completed a residency in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, ER, or PMR. It will provide the training needed to diagnose and manage medical illnesses and injuries related to sports and exercise. Fellows gain expertise in injury prevention, pre-participation evaluation, return to play criteria, management of acute and chronic illness or injury, and rehabilitation. Fellows function as a team physician and serve both individual patients and the community through the promotion of physical fitness and wellness.
The metropolitan Saint Louis area provides superb opportunities for sporting event coverage. Fellows will be assistant team physicians for Saint Louis University and McKendree College and will function as the primary physicians for local high schools. Throughout the year, the sports medicine fellows will also be integral in medical coverage and planning of mass participation events, including the Lewis and Clark Marathon; the Saint Louis Marathon; Saint Louis Ruggerfest (rugby tournament); Illinois Special Olympics; the Saint Louis Gymnastics Classic; NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Final Four; NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships; NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Final Four; and the Missouri Valley Basketball Tournament.
The program is directed under the Department of Family and Community Medicine of Saint Louis University School of Medicine and will be limited to 2 fellows per year, selected on a competitive basis.
Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year are available online at http://www.amssm.org/ and will be accepted through October 16, 2009.
Elective rotations for medical students and residents are also available.
