Mary Case, MD
Dr. Case is a Professor of Pathology and Co-Director of the Division of Forensic Pathology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She serves as the Chief Medical Examiner of St. Louis, Saint Charles, Franklin and Jefferson Counties in Missouri. She is board certified in anatomical and forensic pathology as well as neuropathology. She has special interests in the areas of children’s injuries and head trauma.
Roberta, commonly known as Bertie, is the Supervisor of Investigations of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, having held that position for nine years. She also serves as the president of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) as well as having been associated with the Technical Working Group and ABMDI since its inception. She has two adult daughters and a four-pound wonder Yorkshire terrier named Maxx. The focus of her presentation will be on the investigative response to a prolonged recovery of victims from the bridge collapse that occurred in Minneapolis, and supporting, educating and guiding the families through the event.
Dr. Fierro retired as the Chief Medical Examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2008 after 32 years of service. Dr. Fierro is emeritus Professor and Chair of the Department of Legal Medicine at VA Commonwealth University. She is certified in anatomical, clinical and forensic pathology. She is past president of the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME). She serves on the National Academies Committee on Sceince, Technology and Law on the Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Science Community Project.
Ms. Hargrave is the Chief Investigator for Saint Charles, Jefferson and Franklin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Her special area of interest is in child death investigation. She was on the National Steering Committee for the Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Initiative conducted by the Center’s of Disease Control. She is the Investigator Representative for the National Association of Medical Examiner’s and served on the Strategic Planning Committee.
Mr. Harmon is currently employed as a consultant to numerous law enforcement agencies dealing with such issues as cold case investigation and other issues related to forensic DNA typing. He has written and lectured extensively on the subject of admissibility of forensic evidence, particularly DNA evidence. He is Chairman of the CA District Attorney’s Association Forensic Science Committee.
Ms. Love received her MA and PhD in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is currently the Forensic Anthropology Director at the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office, Houston, TX. Her research interests are bone trauma, bone pathology, and postmortem interval analysis. She is a member of the American Association of Forensic Sciences and International Association of Identification.
Professor. McGraugh is a graduate of Washington University School of Law. After graduation, she served as a trial attorney in the Missouri Public Defender system for eight years. Professor McGraugh was employed for several years as the Director of Restorative Justice at the St. Louis Archdiocesan Human Rights Office. She also served as a municipal judge for the City of St. Louis. Currently, Professor McGraugh is na Assistant Clinical Professor of Law at Saint Louis University School of Law.
Mr. Melson became the First Assistant United States Attorney in 1986, a position that he retained for twenty-one years. On three occasions, he has been the acting or interim United States Attorney. In May 2007, Mr. Melson was appointed by the Attorney General as the Director of the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys. He is a Past President and Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences where he currently serves on the Ethics Committee. He has served on several editorial boards, contributed chapters and articles to both scientific texts and legal journals.
Mr. Miller is the coroner of Dekalb County, Illinois where he has served as elected coroner since 1984. Prior to that, he served five years as Deputy Coroner. Mr. Miller has been a member of the Illinois Coroner’s and Medical Examiner’s Association since 1979. He has responded to and assisted with several multi-victim incidents throughout Illinois and Indiana.
Mr. Prosser entered his career in law enforcement as a patrolman with the Round Lake Beach, Illinois Police Department. He joined the Marshals Service in January 1992. In his fifteen year career with the United States Marshal Service, he has twelve years of experience in fugitive investigations. He has been a member of the Technical Operations Group since 2002 when he was promoted to Senior Inspector in the Chicago office of the Technical Operations Groups. In October 2006, he was promoted to Chief Inspector of the North Central region of the Technical Operations Group.
