On behalf of everyone at the Phi Chi house, we congratulate you on your recent acceptance to St. Louis University School of Medicine. The next four years will be full of difficult challenges, and we would like to make your transition into medical school as smooth as possible. Since many of you are probably unfamiliar with the St. Louis area, one of your first concerns will be finding housing. Thus, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity is in unique position to help out by offering housing to incoming first year students.

Phi Chi Medical Fraternity is a co-ed professional fraternity that represents the male and female students in all four years of medical school. If you are hesitant about living in a "Frat house", we would like to assure you that we are not a "Fraternity" in the Animal House image. There are no secret handshakes, uniforms, or hazings. Phi Chi Medical Fraternity is best understood as a community of medical students, where the mission of the house is to encourage students to excel in their studies, friendships, and recreation. Phi Chi Medical Fraternity presents first year students with the opportunity to live and make friends with other first year students as well asnd d receive advice from 2 , 3 , and 4' year students who either live in the house or attend meetings and functions. There are many other benefits for students who live in the Phi Chi house in addition to friendships made, some of which we give here in our "Top- 10 List" of what life at Phi Chi offers:
  1. Phi Chi is a mere 2-3 minute drive (10- 15 minute walk) from the medical school, which is important during winter and ideal for late risers, people without cars, and anyone who hates wasting time commuting. There is plenty of lighted, street parking in front of the house.
  2. In addition to being so close to school, the house is less than half a block from Reservoir Park, which is currently undergoing renovations that should be completed over the summer. Forest Park (which houses the St. Louis Art Museum, History Museum, Science Center, Zoo, plenty of running/ biking trails, barbecue pits, and more) is about two miles away- especially great for biking there with a few housemates
  3. Each room is a single, furnished with a closet, bed, desk, chair, and what ever you want to bring. All the rooms have their own lock, providing privacy.
  4. The house provides a social outlet after long days of class and studying. Since everyone is going through the same thing, there are no problems with noisy neighbors when you need to study.
  5. Breakfast foods (cereal, milk, bagels, etc.), some kitchen supplies (tin foil, plastic wrap, etc.), and cleaning supplies are included in rent- less shopping for you.
  6. The house is equipped with a dining room, a large living room with a fireplace, den with couches and cable TV, weight bench and laundry facilities. The kitchen comes with pots & pans, plates, utensils, coffee maker, etc. so you do not need bring or buy all your own stuff.
  7. Rent will be $250 $10. This includes breakfast food, local phone, utilities, laundry fees, and more. As affordable as the Midwest may be, we believe you will be hard-pressed to out do this price, with these living arrangements, anywhere on your own. There is even potential to reduce rent more by taking a leadership position in the house.
  8. Social functions! Historically the house fields intramural teams, hosts a couple of school parties, organizes sit-down dinners with various guests (Deans, instructors, alumni), and what ever the people living here during a particular year want to do.
  9. Flexibility. Start a recycling program, find a cook to come in and make house meals, organize a cleaning schedule vs. hiring a maid service, or anything else you can imagine are all possible. Just get your housemates to agree! In past years food has been catered or even cooked by an in-house cook, but if the people living here would rather have the flexibility of eating out or cooking for themselves then you decide on the arrangements!
  10. Call us and find out more about living here, life in medical school, or St. Louis in general. Find out what the people who came here recently would do differently!

If you would like to get the most out of your first year of medical school, consider living at Phi Chi. Make reservations by sending an advanced deposit of $300, which will be returned to you at the end of your stay with Phi Chi. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis, and deposits are refundable until August 1st

We are happy to answer any questions you have about Phi Chi or any aspect of SLU Medical School. You can contact one of the house managers at (314) 865-1461, by direct mail, or by email at phichi@slu.edu. We also encourage you to visit the Phi Chi web site at http://medschool.slu.edu/phichi. Even though this site is currently under construction, pictures and information about the house and the surrounding area are currently available. Good luck in your new adventure and we look forward to meeting you in August!
